Ayurveda tips for the summer

Ayurveda tips for the summer

As summer approaches, it brings with it longer days, warmer weather and a boost of energy. Many of us find it easier at this time to get up early in the morning and enjoy the natural rhythm of the season. However, according to Ayurveda - the ancient Indian system of medicine - the characteristics of summer can also cause imbalances in our bodies. The hot, spicy and pervasive nature of the season can cause pitta dosha, the subtle energy responsible for metabolism, to surge, leading to problems such as sunburn, hot flashes, exhaustion, acne and digestive issues. Emotionally, excess pitta can manifest as anger, jealousy and impatience.

Diet
To maintain balance and harmony during the hot summer days, it is important to adjust our diet accordingly. Ayurveda recommends incorporating more "cooling" foods into our meals and limiting or avoiding "heating" foods. Cooling foods such as cucumbers, summer squash, leafy greens, melons, grapes and stone fruits should be preferred. It is also recommended to drink at least six cups of water per day to stay hydrated and replenish moisture lost from the intense heat.

Skin
When taking care of our skin in the summer, we must prioritize hydration. The sun's rays can dry out the skin, leading to various skin problems such as wrinkles and fine lines. It is important to use moisturizing products and cleanse our face regularly with cold water to remove sweat, pollutants and makeup residues that can clog our pores. Massaging the skin with a pitta-soothing oil, such as the body oils from the asmi collection, before bathing can help calm the nervous system and cool the body. In addition, this oil massage can be beneficial before swimming, as it protects the skin from the effects of salt water or chlorine.

Activities
Here are some activities that will keep you more balanced:
Exercise early in the morning before it gets too warm.
Spend time in or near the water, whether at the beach, riverbank or lake.
Enjoy a leisurely evening walk in the moonlight under a refreshing summer night sky.

Sleep
Because of the high energy level, it can be a little difficult to sleep at night. The heat can make you tired early in the evening. If you go to bed too early, you may wake up in the middle of the night. Especially on very hot days, a nap can help replenish your energy levels so you can make the most of the day. Before bed, treat yourself to a foot and face wash and a massage with our deep sleep oil. Ideally, go to bed at 10 or 11 p.m. to avoid an overly stimulated mind. Sleeping on your right side will stimulate the lunar orbit in your left nostril, which has a calming and cooling effect.

By following these tips, we can make the most of summer, enjoying its vibrant energy while maintaining our balance and well-being.
