āsmi & Thanal

We are grateful for your support in our mission to help Thanal, a great NGO that supports farmers and ecology in Kerala, the birthplace of Ayurveda. With your purchase, you have directly contributed to their agroecology center, where farmers are trained and given resources to implement sustainable farming practices. This benefits not only the farmers themselves, but also the environment and overall health of the community. When you choose our products, you are not only investing in your own well-being, but also contributing to the positive development of farmers and our planet. Thank you for joining us in our efforts to build a better future.

Its focus on cleaning up beaches and increasing biodiversity in tropical rainforests allows us to be part of a much broader initiative than just carbon offsetting. The roots were laid in 2009 with the idea of starting seed conservation in Wayanad - a mainly tribal district with a heritage of indigenous cultivation and knowledge. Since then, Thanalal has broken new ground by engaging local farmers in a network where they grow one or two seeds that help preserve their unique history.

Thanal preserves more than 300 indigenous rice varieties in its diversity block in Wayanad. Varieties suitable for different geographical conditions such as highland rice varieties, flood-tolerant varieties, salt-tolerant varieties, deep-water varieties, etc., and varieties with special characteristics such as fragrant varieties, medicinal varieties, etc., are preserved here. It is also home to various species of birds, butterflies, dragonflies and spiders, which we have also documented. During the rice field week, visitors are shown this diversity so that they understand the importance of agroecology. At the AEC, we pursue and propagate agroecological farming practices that can improve food security and strengthen food sovereignty while enabling better adaptation to climate change and reducing harmful environmental impacts.
