What We Leave Behind. Legacy Is More Than Possessions.

Was wir hinterlassen. Erbe ist mehr als Besitz.

āsME · October 2026

What we leave behind. Legacy is more than possessions.

About values we don't preach — but live. And what our children really take with them from us.

When we talk about inheritance, we first think of house, money, wealth. But what children really inherit begins much earlier — and is much quieter.

It begins with what they see. What we do when we think no one is watching. The decisions we make when it's uncomfortable. How we treat people who have less than us. How we treat the world we all live in.

He never talked about values. He lived them.

My father never preached. He didn't talk about modesty — he was simply modest. He didn't talk about helpfulness — he helped. Without fanfare, without expecting anything in return. That still inspires me today. Not because he would have explained it to me, but because he showed it to me.

I learned: children don't need lectures about values. They need people who live these values — especially when no one is watching.

This applies to everything: to honesty, to respect, to the use of resources. And it also applies to conscious consumption. Documentaries about plastic waste have had little effect on my daughters. Explanations about environmental protection also not much. But when I show them the āsmi packaging — the tea tins that can be refilled again and again, or the compostable refill bags — then they see the idea in practice.

When they visit the Wertkreis and see how an inclusive team produces the products — then they understand that behind every purchase there is a decision. No explanation could have made this so clear.

The river, the plastic, the moment.

We are currently in India — on vacation. Here we see with our own eyes what plastic waste does to rivers and lakes. My daughters see it. I say nothing. I don't have to say anything.

Some things need no words. They only need an open eye, the right moment — and a foundation that has already been laid, step by step, at home, while shopping, in everyday life.

All you can do is: live your life in such a way that your own children have an example to follow. Not perfect. But consistent.

What remains are not the things we buy for our children. It is the decisions we make every day before their eyes — and which, without us noticing, slowly become theirs.
